For this project, I was tasked with designing a book cover based on a poem. After exploring various options, I chose "Dreams" by Langston Hughes (1901–1967). The poem reads:
“Hold fast to dreams
For if dreams die
Life is a broken-winged bird
That cannot fly.
Hold fast to dreams
For when dreams go
Life is a barren field
Frozen with snow.”
For if dreams die
Life is a broken-winged bird
That cannot fly.
Hold fast to dreams
For when dreams go
Life is a barren field
Frozen with snow.”
The emotional depth and vivid imagery of the poem inspired me to create a cover that conveyed its message of loss and hope. I designed a watercolor illustration of a broken-winged bird, symbolizing the theme of unfulfilled dreams. The soft, fluid watercolor style helped capture both the fragility and beauty of the poem, while the bird's broken wings represented the impact of lost dreams. This project gave me the opportunity to visually interpret the powerful emotions of the poem and create a cover that reflected its essence.
